The Railway Mafia once again defeated Castle Park this time at the Showfield.
Despite the
return of all-time top scorer Paul Elgey, it was Mafia’s Ryan Myers who stole
the show by breaking the goals in a game record when he netted ELEVEN times!!!
Big bad Ben
Roe netted his first ever hat-trick and newcomers Terry Cummins and Ed Tabner
were also on the scoresheet.
The one
bright spot for Castle Park was a superbly struck 25 yard drive from captain
Paul Owen which delighted the two small children behind the goal.
The Mafia
were in front in just 65 seconds when Ben Roe was left unmarked to score from
point blank range. Soon the score rose to 2-0 before Park had a good spell of
pressure with some good passing play but the finishing let them down. Grisedale
scuffed his shot on two occasions when well placed and Elgey failied to net
after a marathon goalmouth scramble which included at least 6 tries.
Mafia moved
into a 5-0 lead with ten minutes remaining in the half. But Waring struck from
close range and Headlam’s tap-in made it 5-2 but a late goal from Roe after a
lucky ricochet off Jackson meant the score was 6-2 at the break.
The Mafia
dominated the second half and moved into a 10-2 lead in just 20 minutes.
Jackson replaced Lewis in net but was powerless to stop the onslaught. It was
15-2 before Owen scored the goal of the match. Mike Headlam’s shot was charged
down by Prudom and the ball fell to Owen just outside the area on the left and
the skipper struck the ball sweetly into the top corner.
Myers took
his goal tally into double figures and Grisedale conceded a penalty with a late
sliding challenge on the pint-sized maverick. Newcomer Ed Tabner stepped up to
send Jackson the wrong way with a well placed penalty kick.
Roe grabbed
his hat-trick moments later, before Waring produced a sublime/fortunate chip
over Cummins from 16 yards to grab his second. Right on the stroke of
full-time, Myers grabbed the final goal of the game with a close range finish.
Although the
scoreline was more than a little flattering, there was no doubt who was the
better team on the day.
